Safely Remove Your Gel Polish at Home

If you're currently avoiding the salon but still need to remove your gel manicure, it's important to learn how to do it properly.

It goes without saying that once your gel manicure starts to grow out, it starts to look messy and unappealing. In addition, letting your gel polish grow out too far can actually strain your nails, affecting their health. The imbalanced weight and potentially lifted edges can cause your nails to become frail and damaged. Your best bet is to totally remove your gel polish once it starts to grow out.

With a couple key tools, the right process, and a bit of extra care, you can safely and simply strip away your gel nail polish! Keep in mind, the DIY gel nail removal process does require a bit of patience in order to restore your nails in a healthy way.

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools to get the job done. You will need:

A Nail File
Nail Polish Remover or Acetone
Cotton Balls
Tin Foil
Cuticle Serum
Moisturizing Hand Lotion
Wooden Cuticle Stick (optional)

To remove your gel polish, follow these steps:

File Them Down - No need to overthink it; file your nails the same way they would at a salon. Using a fresh nail file, loosen up the top layer of your gel nail polish. Scratching the surface with a coarse nail file will help the acetone penetrate quickly and effectively.
Soak Them Off - Place an acetone-soaked cotton ball on each of your nails, then wrap the tip of your finger with a small piece of tin foil. The foil will help to hold the cotton ball in place so the acetone can do its job. Leave your nails wrapped for approximately 15 minutes or longer, until the polish begins to slide off.
Gently Remove Them - Using the cotton ball, your nail file, or a wooden cuticle stick, gently slide the gel polish off your nails. If this portion feels like a chore, use a cotton ball to soak your nails for a bit longer.
Wash Up & Moisturize - Acetone can quickly dry out your skin and cuticles. After you’ve removed your gel polish, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly to remove any traces of acetone.

A couple tips to keep in mind:

Remove your gel polish on one hand at a time. It will be easier to apply the cotton ball and tin foil, and you will have a free hand to use while you wait!
Check your local beauty supply store for gel polish removal sets! Many times, they will include all the products you may need to remove your polish.
Consider browsing a couple videos online to actually see the process done. Different videos could include different tricks or tips that you may find helpful.

Change your nail polish remover and nail varnish. Acetone, a key ingredient in many nail polish removers, can dry out nails almost immediately - and remember, hydrated nails are healthy nails. Choose an acetone-free nail polish remover for the best results. And when you pick out nail varnish, choose a varnish that is all-natural or even a “free-from” varnish that leaves out some of the harsh chemicals many other varnishes pack in.
Invest in better equipment. A soft nail file is gentler on your nails than a glass nail file. You might also want to look into a daily keratin treatment. Keratin is the natural material that makes your nails flexible, and a treatment can give your nails the strength they need to stand up to everyday wear and tear.

How Much Should I Tip My Hair Stylist?

When it comes to tipping your hairdresser, there is no "rule" saying that it is necessary. However, it is very much appreciated! Even though its essentially the same thing as tipping a server or delivery driver, it's not uncommon to feel uncomfortable about tipping your hair stylists. If you feel this way because you don't know how much is the right amount, you're not alone.

There are a couple things to consider when deciding a proper tip amount:

The general rule of thumb when it comes to tipping your hair stylist is 20%, regardless of the service they are providing you with. Just stopping in for a quick, free bang trim? Tipping $5 to $10 is always a nice gesture.

Don't forget to consider the assistant that shampoos and conditions your hair. Make sure to ask the receptionist how tips are divided. If an assistant washes your hair and does not get a cut, it is common to tip $3 to $5.

Think about how much time you spent at the salon. Are you just getting a quick trim and will be done within an hour? Is your stylists spending a ton of time dying and cutting your hair? If you are at the salon for more than three hours and getting a decent amount of work done, consider tipping closer to 22 or 25 percent.

If a major holiday is approaching, do you tip a bit extra? There is no right or wrong answer to this question. If you see your hair dresser every month or so, throwing them an extra tip around the holidays is like a little thank you for an entire year's worth of service. Feeling extra generous? 5 Easy Steps For The Perfect Cat Eye

We’ve broken down the cat eyeliner process into 5 simple steps. Keep in mind, all eyes are not created equal, and practice makes perfect. You may have to practice and experiment to find the perfect angle and wing length for your eye shape. For example, if you have wider set eyes, you’re going to want to make sure your wing is shorter and pointed upward. For close set eyes, you’re going to do the opposite – create a longer and slightly more horizontal line for best results.

Connect Your Lash Line – Once you have your triangle drawn and filled in, apply the eyeliner to the rest of your eyelid. Apply as you normally would, allowing your triangle to guide you. Gradually draw your liner thinner as you get closer to the inner corner of your eye. Allow to dry.
Touch Ups – with a damp Q-Tip, gently touch up your wings and reapply liner as needed. Remove any smudges that you may have, then you can finish the look with a couple of coats of your favorite mascara. Voila! Perfect cat eyes, every time.

Be Proactive – When you’re working with your own clients, you don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you can’t answer a client’s question. Take the initiative to stay on top of your reading, but also go beyond that by staying on top of the latest and most up to date skin trends and techniques. How To Become A Cosmetologist

Have you ever thought of becoming a Cosmetologist? The Cosmetology field is a rewarding choice for a career. Not everyone has the skills it takes to excel in this field. A friendly personality combined with intelligence & a capacity to learn & try new things is prerequisite to this vocation.

The first step to becoming a Cosmetologist is going to beauty school. There are many cosmetology schools to choose from. Do your research & find the best vocational school for your needs. There are many things you should consider, proximity to your home, available courses, financial affordability etc. You may want to find a beauty school that has smaller class sizes, as this can give you the one-on-one time to really develop your skills.

Once you have found the cosmetology school that meets your criteria, schedule a visit to the school. You can check out the class sizes & see the teachers interacting with the students. Most beauty schools offer services to the public at a discounted rate. This gives their students the opportunity to practice their craft on “real” people. Schedule an appointment to have your hair done or a manicure on your nails. This way you will be able to see the students in action. Are there instructors there to guide the new hair stylists? If this option appeals to you, the choice of school would be limited as there is usually only one vocational school associated with each high school. Whether you choose to pursue your career part time or full time, you will need to accumulate so many hours before you go on to pass your boards. Once you fulfill these requirements you will become a licensed cosmetologist. You may then work in any salon or professional hair stylist establishment. In most states there is a different license for barbers & cosmetologists, so you will probably not be able to work in a barbershop with a cosmetology license, but you will be able to work in any salon that you choose! Pools, beaches and soaking up the sun are sizzling-fun activities for you of course, but not so much for your hair. Tinkering and Tangling

Put the brush down, and unplug those hair dryers. Manicure Your Nails Like A Professional

Manicuring nails is beauty procedure that serves to highlight the discrepancy between an amateur and a professional. For those wishing to enter cosmetology school, or if you’re just looking for a professional look and quality, there are a few essential tips to manicuring nails that will really make the difference.

Everyone thinks that they can manicure nails correctly, but are your skills really up to snuff? A good manicure involves a lot more than a basic file and a layer of polish, and growing talent in manicuring arts and other grooming practices can prove to become a marketable trade in a cosmetology school. The following are some tips and points to remember for an advanced manicure that goes beyond the basic clip and paint for some truly beautiful nails.

Prep – The first step is preparation. Use cotton balls and nail polish remover to take off the current coat of polish. Your nail’s natural color may seem to be tinted yellow, but this is a normal side effect of extensive polish use and is not really a problem unless the structural integrity of the nail is lacking. If your fingers are swelling, or your nail is overly sensitive or bleeding, then immediately seek medical help and DO NOT continue with the manicure.
Form – Next, form the nail using a file and cuticle treatment. Remember that an overly rough or worn nail file will weaken and compromise a nail’s health. Using a superfine grit nail file will smooth the ridges of the nail without weakening it. Remember to keep nail length generally uniform; ¼ inch beyond the fingertip is a good length to aim for. Rather than removing the cuticle, moisturize it with a pre-soak, and use a cuticle pusher to peel the cuticle back and further expose your nail for an even coat.
Paint – Before using colored polishes, apply a clear base coat and let if fully dry. Only then apply your colored coat with full, even strokes going from the base of the nail to the tip. Always wait for a polish coat to fully dry before you add the next coat, and avoid getting polish on your skin as it prevents the skin from breathing correctly. There are all sorts of patterns and designs that the creative mind can play with, so try new things and keep aware of designs that the professionals and beauty schools are experimenting with.
Additional Tips – Well there you go; your manicured nails have the look and flair of a professional job! Remember that an even top coat will make any design last, and to use polishes and products that do not contain chemicals like dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toulene, and formaldehyde as over exposure to these can be hazardous. Taking Vitamin B can strengthen your nails as well if you find that extensive polish use has weakened them.

Practicing and perfecting the manicure does not come overnight, and every hand requires different treatment. Practice whenever you can and experiment with polish design, and pretty soon you will be ready for beauty school training in manicuring nails!

Don’t wash your hair every day

Passion is Key!

Hi, yall! I'm so excited about this opportunity to share my heart and passion for this industry with ya'll! My name is Kaylee Harbin, I'm 21, and I graduated from С�Ŵ�ý, Abilene in November of 2015. I'm in love with what I do!
Rewind about 3 years ago, that definitely wasn't the case. 3 years ago, I'd just graduated high school and was suffering through nursing school. Now, nothing against nurses, but it was absolutely not my cup of tea. I knew I wanted to help people, and I had a desire to serve people, I was just wasn't sure nursing was my calling. After my husband was given orders to Dyess AFB, Abilene in the summer of 2013 I knew I was done with nursing school. After stirring with what to do and going back and forth for over a year, I decided that maybe cosmetology school was something I could do. Like I said previously, I had the heart for people, I had some talent with a curling iron, and I was fairly certain coloring someone's hair couldn't be that hard. So, I visited the school, got the tour, met some of the girls, and began feeling like maybe this could be it.
I started my first day so excited and full of jitters! And before I knew it, that excitement turned into full blown passion! I'd never yearned to learn more than I did my year in school. My instructors were the best of the best and instilled in me, not only the principles I would need but also the confidence that is demanded of a stylist. I aspired to be the best stylist I could be! And that brings me to where I am now. I'm currently working for the Salon at Ulta, continuing to learn and grow everyday. Design and finish is where my heart is and I'm working everyday to be a well rounded stylist and advancing my knowledge and expertise in color. Everyday brings new challenges and new experiences. I'm so blessed to do what I love everyday and to be given the opportunity to be of service to my clients. I recently read another blog that posed the question "if you didn't get paid to do what you do, would you still do it?". My answer is yes, a million times over, yes!!
